Introduction to the Digitally Released Album

Voices of Water (Demo)

Koji Sakurai x 鄭詠珊

Following our collaboration on the oratorio version of "Deep Lake Man" this is a new choral work co-created with my wife, Cheng Yungsan. Designed specifically for a female choir, the suite consists of nine songs inspired by the theme of "water," seamlessly connected by a prologue and three interludes. In addition to the piano, the accompaniment incorporates an organ to provide richer musical layers and emotional depth.

In the past, producing demos for vocal tracks required live singers. However, for this project, I experimented with using AI vocalists. While there is still room for improvement, the convenience of this new technology is truly remarkable. This album features the demo versions I produced—I hope you enjoy listening to them.

THE EARLY YEARS (Demo)

Koji Sakurai

"Last Forever — from Eileen Chang’s Red Rose, White Rose" was my first string ensemble piece, composed in 2015. In this work, I experimented with cluster chords for the first time and incorporated various string techniques I had mastered at that time. To date, it remains my most frequently performed work.

"Craving Beauty" is an organ concerto composed in 2023 for the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) 5th Anniversary Concert. The premiere featured the internationally renowned organist Christian Schmitt, and it marked my first time composing for the largest pipe organ in Asia.

"Undaunted Spirit:Double concerto for Violin and Percussion" is a double concerto for violin and percussion composed in 2024 for the Ju Percussion Group and Wu Ting-yu. Scored for a solo violin, a principal percussionist, and nine percussion accompanists, the piece was written to be performed entirely without microphones. Consequently, the arrangement involves careful consideration of volume and acoustic balance.

Sketches from the Journey - the Joy and Sorrow of Life (Demo)

Koji Sakurai

This work was completed during the COVID-19 pandemic and is an adaptation of my musical theater piece, ”The Night Train to the Star”.

The 2005 multimedia version required synchronization with visuals and lighting, so despite having live musicians, I relied heavily on pre-recorded computer music. I wanted to transform this into a purely instrumental version, adding piano, viola, and double bass to the original violin, cello, and clarinet. My goal was to rearrange it as a chamber sextet, hoping this instrumentation would offer more opportunities for the piece to be performed.

This album features the demo versions produced by me.

The Night Train to the Stars (Multimedia Musical Theater Soundtrack) (2026 Remastered Edition)

Koji Sakurai

Kenji Miyazawa's original novel contains many descriptions of music and sound—for instance, mentioning the "New World Symphony" or describing a character's voice as sounding like a cello. I integrated these elements into the music during the creative process.

This album was originally released in 2005 to coincide with the premiere at the National Theater's Experimental Theatre. The musicians involved in the recording were Wei-hsun Na (violin), Hui-yun Han (cello), Kun-feng Li (clarinet), and Yungsan Cheng, who performed the theme song.

The album was nominated for the Golden Melody Award for Best Crossover Music Album. As the original release was a limited edition, it has been remastered and released digitally this year.
